Description
ABERMAGWR, Aberystwyth (SN 6686 7398)
Two flint cores, three cortical flakes, a blade and a flake fragment, together with a flint nodule with two removals and a natural flint fragment, were collected over several days in July 1997 from a ploughed field c 500m west of Lodge Farm, Abermagwr, by Ms R Charnock whilst engaged in experimental crop work for the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research. Of the two flint cores, the larger (29mm x 25mm x 12mm) is very heavily burnt with traces of possible retouch, or edge damage caused by burning, along the edges of the piece. The smaller core (25mm x 20mm x 13mm), made from pebble flint, has evidence of platform preparation for blade removal. Of the remaining lithics, one blade and one flake bear signs of retouch. The site of the lithic scatter lies some 60m SE of Nant Magwr, separated by a minor road and two recently constructed bungalows. An air photograph taken of the field by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales in 1989 (895060-12) shows the cropmark of a relict stream channel, diverging from the course of the Nant Magwr and crossing the western end of the field in the vicinity of the lithic finds. It is not known whether this river was extant at the time the lithics were deposited. The finds have been placed in the Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth.
