Description
Heol-ddu is an eighteenth century gentry farmstead (NPRN 31610) with a main house of 1742/8 (NPRN 17427). The stable range lies to the south-east of the house and carries a datestone of 1758.
This is a single storey lofted range, facing north-west towards the house. The walls are of stone rubble under a modern roof. The main elevation is near symmetrical with a central cart entry, now reduced, inserted windows to either side and boarded stable doors at each end. The openings have timber lintles. The loft is reached by outside steps against the north gable and is lit by ventilation slits.
These arrangements are unusual for a stable building and it is possible that this was originally a barn. Alternatively it could have been a combined coachhouse and stables. It can be compared to the rather later Barn north-east of the house that may originally have been a stable building (NPRN 306671).
