DescriptionA rectangular platform, c.58m north east-south west by 28m, defined by a moat, now filled in/dry to the north east, c.78m by 58m overall (source Os495card; SJ23NE2). The moat is thought to have been constructed in the l.13th c. as a consequence of the establishment of the lordship of Chirk (Pratt 1996, 14-15). The moat is broadest on the south east, entrance front, where a semi-circular bay at the south angle may suggest an immitation of Chirk Castle (Nprn145757), as the 13th century moat/garden at Belgrave, Eccleston, is held to reference Flint Castle (Miles 1996; Turner et al 1986). The New Hall mansion is described in a poem of the 1450's (See Notes).
Associated with New Hall (Nprn27568).
