Description
Date inscription of 1689 on one of the present farmbuildings, said to have been used as a Sunday School. Ex inf. Mr David Edwards, Cockfosters, who photographed the inscription Summer 2002. (2003.03.13/RCAHMW/RFS)
[Additional:] The range is a four-bay barn with opposed doorways, superseded by the ranges of the C19th farmstead to the N., and subsequently re-roofed and adapted as a shed and for feed preparation. It is the earliest recorded dated farm building in Ceredigion. Photographed by I.N. Wright. (2003.03.13/RCAHMW/RFS)

A 19th century farmhouse and complex on the south-west side of Cors Caron, with one earlier building - Y Fagwrni - of considerable interest.

Y Fagwrni (The Ruin) is built of coursed rubble stone and stands overlooking the parallel 19th century farm ranges. there is a deeply cut date inscription with seriffied initials which reads D M I H 168[9] - the last numeral is only apparent on a photograpgh of 2002. the building is associated with an early sunday school held at Pen-Cefn, and in its last phase the building was re-roofed and used in association with the farm pigsties. The original function of this substantial range is not obvious, but careful examination suggests it is a barn of four bays with two opposed doorways (one now blocked, the other enlarged) flanking a threshing floor. Most other threshing barns of this date are three bays, and the size of this example indicates a considerable investment, marked by the dated inscription. It is the oldest dated farm building in Ceredigion, and the fourth oldest dated building in the county, and was apparently superceeded by the 19th century farm complex.
