DescriptionThornbury Roman Camp appears to be a temporary Roman military camp. Cropmarks define a rectilinear ditched enclosure with rounded corners roughly 120-135m north-east to south-west by 110m, enclosing an area of about 1.3-1.4ha. No entrances can be made out. The north-west side rests on the far crest of a gentle ridge, suggesting that the camp faced south-east.
Although published plans show an unconvincing irregular enclosure, examination of the original coverage (CUAP CBF7) shows it had the relatively regular outline characteristic of Roman military enclosures.
It does not appear that the camp was cut by the adjacent Roman road.
