Description

1. A main opencast, c.55m by 40m, set into a S-facing hillside, within an area of spoil dumps, c.180m NE-SW by 140m. Two linear quarries are also apparent, that to the S possibly being an earlier feature. At least 4 stone-built rectangular structures, c.4.5m by 3.0m appear in the area of spoil, with a larger struture, c.10m long, set by the linear quarry to the S.

2. Tyrch slate quarry is located on the southern slopes of Foel Dyrch to the south-east of Mynachlog Du, and measures approx 100m by 75m, Ordnance Survey County Series mapping shows a trackway running from the quarry eastwards towards two buildings, Fron-drych (NPRN 308718) and Fron haul. There is a smaller quarry approx 400m west of Tyrch quarry and another approx 840m to the north-east.
The quarry was in use during the later nineteenth century but was out of use before 1953.
