Description
The house in the Middle Ward of Montgomery Castle was built for Sir Edward Herbert in 1622 by the Scampion family of builders from Hertfordshire. The Herbert family moved there from Black Hall, the house that they occupied following their move from the original accomodation at Montgomery Castle when that had become dilapidated by the end of the sixteenth century. The new house was brick-built and included stables as well living space. It was demolished in 1649 as a penalty for Sir Edward Herbert's support for the Royalist cause in the Civil War.
