Description
Ty Round is a Ca 1800, stone-built, single-storey, thatched, hip-roof cottage of 2-units with central-entry and lateral chimney. It has recently been improved with new external thatch and plastered internal walls. It has a remarkable under-thatch (smoke-blackened) of wickerwork woven between split oak rafters, which along with its roof-trusses have been retained. There is no evidence for original partitions, now that the walls are newly plastered, but it is likely that there was a partition to left of entry dividing the space into kitchen/living-room and parlour/chamber.
The kitchen has small original window openings and one timber casement window of 2 lights with ogee moulded mullions and a rebate for glass (see sketch). The wider parlour casement window has been enlarged, in the past. The kitchen fireplace with a timber lintel, is positioned on the lateral wall, now blocked by a later, smaller brick opening. Although the roof timbers are smoke-blackened (suggesting a former open hearth), it is more likely that the fireplace with its low chimney stack is original and smoke blew back rather badly over a long period.
The roof consists of two oak lap-collar trusses with mortise & tenon apexes, two side-purlins, and hip-truss ends, all held with angle set pegs. The rafters are of split oak intertwined with hazel wattles. The thatch was formerly of straw, now newly thatched in reed
This building has an odd name and is of unusual style and may have been a gate-house to Glyn Aeron, perhaps copying an estate built `cottage ornee' style.
