The imposing gatehouse to the New Gaol in Montgomery was designed by J.H. Poundley of Kerry in 1866, and replaced the original access which was from Chirbury Road. It is a grandiose italianate structure built from brown sandstone with green sandstone detail. Above the arch on a shallow gable are carved Royal Arms, and other notable features include the giant Roman Doric pilasters and a keystone inscribed with 'AD 1866'. The rooms on either side of the arch have now been converted into private houses.
