1. One of two dams on the uplands north of Swansea that failed. This dam was built between 1860 and 1878 by G. Couzens but was taken out of surface in 1919 because seepage into the mine workings below had reached a quantity which had become unacceptable. The contemporary Lower Lliw Reservoir by R. Rawlinson had springs below its puddled dam core, and the dam with its handsome rusticated stone features was replaced in 1976-78 by a new structure by Binnie & Partners. Source: G. M.
