Description
A field referred to as Cnwc-y-Crogwydd (`gallows hillock?) in the mid-18th century tithe schedule lies to the immediate south of Cnwcau Farm (depicted as Cnwc Farm on first edition Ordnance Survey mapping). As the name suggests, the mound was formerly the site of the town gallows, but it may also have been a Bronze round barrow. Cnwc-y-Crogwydd is also the findspot of Newport 2 (NPRN 304307), a cross-incised early medieval pillar stone, first noted in use as a gatepost to the enclosure. The presence of the stone (if in situ) on the site of a (possible) Bronze Age round barrow indicates that the site may have been an early medieval period ecclesiastical enclosure. The field is now the location of modern housing.
