Lady Windsor Colliery was opened in 1885 by the Ocean Coal Company and went on to provide steam coal for prestigious maritime concerns including the Admiralty and Cunard Company. In 1973 the colliery merged with Abercynon Colliery. The Lady Windsor Lodge assumed a leading role in the 1984-1985 Miners' Strike. The Lady Windsor / Abercynon Colliery was closed by British Coal in February 1988.

The colliery was first depicted by OS on County series mapping 2nd ed. (Glamorgan. XXVIII.2 1900).
