Description
A leat has been traced from surface remains and documentry sources, running for roughly 2.0km around the southern slopes of Bryn Cysegfra, from a source on the Clywedog-uchaf, at SN65545189 to the reported site of a wheel-pit at 'Mountain', SN63535192 (Bick 1978, fig.14): short sections of the leat, at SN65545189 and SN65305196, have been reported to be well preserved (Bick 1978), whilst the section known as "Heolddwr" (ibid), from SN64565188 to SN63695167, is still in use as a track.
Although the leat has been claimed as a Roman feature (Bick 1988, 21), recent work suggest that it is post-medieval in origin, out of use & in parts re-used as a trackway by about 1850: sections taken across the feature suggest that it saw little, if any use (Timberlake 2003): crossing the area of the rabbit warren on the flank of Bryn Cysegfra (Nprn303542) the leat was observed to cut across an area of cultivation features, these being thought to be medieval, or later (Austin 1988, 151-2): the leat is associated with the lead & silver mine at Llanfair Clydogau, which operated from before about 1760 until 1862 (Nprn33882).
