Description
A haematite or iron ore mine, on the summit of Moel Hiraddug within the ramparts of the great hillfort (NPRN 95092), now destroyed by limestone quarrying.
The mine is depicted on early editions of the OS County series (Flintshire IV.4 1872, 1899, 1913). In 1872 only an 'old quarry' is depicted. In 1899 a 'shaft (cobalt)' appears. This can be associated with the construction of an access road in 1872 when fragments of an Iron Age shield were found. The associated tip overlay the hillfort's ramparts. By 1913 the shaft is shown as disused.
