The Admiralty established a dockyard here in 1814 with the transfer of shipbuilding facilities from Milford. Many early and mid nineteenth century buildings remain, together with military buildings from later periods. The site is now mainly used for non-military purposes including light industry and residential, and for Irish ferry services.
