The Pontardulais Viaduct at Morlais Junction spans the River Loughor and was built by the Great Western Railway as part of the Swansea District Line. It was opened in 1913 and was principally built to allow trains to avoid delays in Swansea by by-passing the city altogether (hence its alternative name of the Swansea Avoiding Line) thus making it part of a faster link between London and Fishguard and the Cunard Company Liner link to New York.
The Viaduct is some 200m long and rises over 20m above the river. It has 11 semi-circular arches, each spanning some 30m and is built in red engineering brick.
