Description
In 1897 the Vale of Glamorgan line was opened from Barry to the Great Western Railway at Bridgend. The line included an impressive 343m long, 16 span viaduct in rock-faced stone with semi-circular brick arch rings, 33.5m high over a deep defile at Porthkerry. Construction of the viaduct was protracted, from 1894 to 1897, due to foundation failure and in 1898 a pier subsided; a temporary diversion was built until the full re-opening of the viaduct in 1900.
