Description
The West Junction Canal (nprn 91444) linked the Glamorganshire Canal (nprn 34425) with the Bute West Dock (nprn 34257) and was bridged by the canal towpath, Bute Road and the Taff Vale Railway (nprn 91550) docks branch. The railway bridge, probably constructed in 1839-40, still survives in use and carries the single-tracked Bute Street branch. It has three arches: a central elliptical segmental arch with bullnosed voussoirs and two flanking semi-circular arched rings. It is of interesting construction, being built on a skew. Originally double tracked, the bridge was widened on the east side to carry another track, with a single span rivetted plate-girder beam carried on masonry abutments.
