Description
Once a thriving hub of industry, Tondu Junction Railway Station, situated some 4km north of Bridgend, served a busy junction with the routes to Porthcawl and Margam to the west, lines from the coal-producing valleys of the Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore to the north and the Bryncethin branch to the east. There was a substantial engine shed and extensive marshalling and holding sidings.
The station opened in 1864 and closed in 1970, the buildings being demolished at about that time. Following reopening of the line for passenger use between Maesteg and Bridgend in 1992, a basic shelter was provided on the single, former down, platform; also on the platform is the stone building of the former GWR freight Control Office (nprn 410288), although it is now sealed and abandoned. Only the passenger-carrying north-south route of the Llynfi Valley and the lower Ogmore Valley was noted in use at the time of a visit on 12 February 2010, all other lines being either dismantled or disused. The signal box (nprn 34883) which formerly controlled the junction still stands to the north of the station.
