Description
Crumlin Viaduct was built in by T. W. Kennard from 1853-7 to carry the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford Railway across the Ebbw Valley. The viaduct was 62 metres (204ft) high making it the third highest viaduct in the world when completed. It was constructed from a wrought and cast iron lattice. The framework of cast-iron tubes were braced together and tapered from the base to the top. The viaduct had seven spans of 46 metres (150ft) long plus three subsidiary spans.
The structure was demolished in 1965 although substantial masonry abutments remain high on the valley-sides above Crumlin Navigation Colliery.
