Description
Small, stone farmhouse ? 16th-17th century Modernised.

[Additional:] Croes-wen is a significant site both in terms of plan and detail. The storeyed house has an unusual plan. It was originally entered via a small central lobby which gave access to parlour (left) and hall (right). The house dates from c. 1600 if not earlier. It was a period of plan experimentation with a central lobby and service-room between the outer parlour and inner hall (see Houses of the Welsh Countryside, pp. 246-7). Croeswen is an early example of experimentation in planning with a small (unheated) outer parlour. In a second phase the hall was directly entered giving two doorways side by side.

Vernacular detail includes a post-and-panel partition, stone fireplace stair with oak topping, first-floor smoke closet (for bacon curing) to left of stack with small external vent. The upper part of the partition truss has an infill of horizontal planks.

Additional (2): Offcuts were taken for dendro analysis. Preliminary results indicate a felling date range between 1544-74. R.F. Suggett/RCAHMW/April 2017
