Description
The parish church of Famdon in Cheshire, England, St Chads is laid out on a plan of the fourteenth century but due to heavy damage in 1643 during the Civil Wars the church, excepting the tower, had to be entirely rebuilt in 1658 with further alterations to the eastern end in 1853-4. Inside the church is a chapel installed for the use of the Barnston family which contains a window commissioned by William Barnston in 1662 to commemorate the Royalist defenders of Chester showing contemporary dress, armour, and military figures. During renovation work in 1800, three white stone effigies of knights were discovered, two of which were ground down and sold, but the third, the effigy of Sir Patrick Barton, was saved, albeit used as a step in the belfry in 1850, and is now in the north aisle.
