Recreational use of the Gamallt lakes began in the C19. In 1885 local quarry owner George Casson stocked the lakes with 15,000 trout . The 1891 OS map marks fish ponds between the two lakes and at the south-west end of the larger lake. These features are no longer visible. Two other structures remain standing: a 'shooting box' (nprn 536588) is marked in 1891, which was probably intended primarily for use by fishing parties, and a boat house (nprn 536587) was added in the twentieth century.
