Description
Cloddfa Gwanas slate and slab quarry is said to have been worked sporadically from the 1840s but had been abandoned by the time of the 1890 OS map. The older of the identifiable workings are on the E side of the summit (nprn 527051, 527049, 527047, 527057, 527059). Later workings are concentrated around a deep pit (nprn 527062) on the W side of the summit, below which is a mine entrance (nprn 527071). Buildings associated with the later phase include workshops (nprn 527070, 527072, 527074, 527075, 527077), and a small barracks (nprn 527068). The slate was taken away by packhorse rather than tramroad and incline. A track leads around the side of the hill above Bwlch Oerddrws and appears to have been the main route (nprn 527045). Another path that takes a more direct, and steeper route, was probably used by workmen (nprn 527078). At the foot of the path is a large enclosure on steep ground, said to have been used for stabling the horses (nprn 308804). Another track leads westwards towards Gwanas Farm (nprn 527081).
