Description
Situated in Cwm Afan north of Maesteg, the Duffryn Rhondda Colliery was sunk sometime prior to 1880 by the Duffryn Rhondda Coal Co. It consisted of a slant and two shafts. The workforce grew to reach 1,500 by 1910. It closed in 1966/7. Great coal spoil tips still stand to the south of the colliery. The four main tips together measure some 600m north-south and stand 100m broad at their widest. Documented during RCAHMW aerial reconnaissance.

T. Driver, RCAHMW, 23rd Sept 2011.
