Machen Quarry is a large dolomitic limestone quarry, supplying roadstone, railway ballast and flux for steel manufacture. Quarrying and lime-burning on site date back to the eighteenth century. The Rumney Tramroad (later Brecon & Merthyr Railway) runs through the site, and this line still provides an outlet for stone. A limekiln (nprn 40708) remains on site and an attractive 'church tower' style 1920s transformer house.
