Description
Maerdy village grew up in the late 1870s with the growth of Maerdy Colliery (NPRNs: 80554, 33505). By 1900 Maerdy was an established town, with churches, chapels, reading rooms (NPRN: 414739), a recreation ground and an infant school, the housing predominantly terraced workers housing. As the mining industry declined so Maerdy has undergone regeneration and redevelopment. Maerdy Colliery finally closed in 1990.
