Description
An important early storeyed house with parlour wing, probably built c. 1575. Main range and wing are box-framed, and the wall-framing appears to have been originally of post-and-panel type. The refacing of the wing is dated 17[] by an inscription in the gable. (R.F. Suggett/RCAHMW/August 2005)

Additional: Tree-ring dating commissioned by RCAHMW and felling-date range of 1545-66 reported in Vernacular Architecture 42 (2011):

Great Cefnyberen is an early T-plan storeyed house of exceptional interest, one of the earliest storeyed houses
identifi ed in Powys. It may be compared with Old Impton with which it shares some distinctive detail, including
the pilasters on the wall framing, as well as the lobby-entry plan (cf. VA 29 (1998), 129). Both hall and cross wing
are timber-built, but framed in a lavish manner. Where the wall-framing can be inspected it is apparent that it is
close-studding of post-and-panel type, having timber studs with oak panels set between them. The house has a
remarkably substantial wall plate supported at intervals by brackets which spring from pilasters carved on the
studs. The original lobby entry was possibly marked by a porch. High-quality detail includes a roll-moulded beam
in the outer parlour and a stellar chimney. A date inscription of 1743 probably marks the re-facing of the cross
wing. Dating commissioned by RCAHMW. NPRN 403397.
