Description
A lofted stable of 1897 is stone-built and slate roofed, of `L' shape plan, situated on a platform with the land sloping to the west. The main east-west range retains a long ceiling-beam with evidence for stalls for 9 horses. The joists against the north wall are alternatively cut back some 50 cm. to provide a former hay-drop. These arrangements were superseded in the 1960s when it became a cow-house with stalls for 14 cattle. Iron pipe stalls concrete mangers and floors with drainage were fitted with a feed-passage against the north wall where two windows were inserted.
The projecting part has had its east wall removed to allow tractor access into what was a separate loose-box with later cattle manger against the south wall. The surviving cobble floors here indicate a partition against the south wall (for chaff ?) and a doorway with a window in the wall that has been removed.
The lofts were reached by external stone stairs to south gable-end and through a loading doorway in the east gable-end. They have softwood joists and boarded floors and a series of square ventilation holes under the eaves. The softwood trusses have bolted lap collars and mortised apexes with 2 pairs of side-purlins and a vertical ridge-piece.
