DescriptionA purpose-built former tannery probably constructed in 1819. The substantial L-plan range enclosed a yard in the Maes-glas area of Machynlleth, a part of the town associated with tanning since (at least) the C17th. The range is stone-built using the friable local stone but with brick-arched doorways facing the yard. The tannery became disused in the later C19th and the range has been latterly used for storage. The interior has been gutted and the pits are no longer visits but the roof-trusses and some roughly-louvered first-floor casements survive. An unobtrusive date inscription on a quoin adjacent to Tabernacle Lane reads 'John Williams 1819'. The date is consistent with the pegged and strapped king-post truss. R.F. Suggett/RCAHMW/March 2006
