Description
What appears to be a bread oven is located inside a tree on pasture farmland at 230m above OD.
The tree is an ancient pollard ash (NPRN 404423) positioned close to the intersection of field boundaries. Its hollowed interior was once open but is now largely closed over. Through a narrow slot on the south-east side can be seen an arc of coursed brickwork, perhaps the remains of the oven built inside the tree when its hollowed interior was more accessible. Probing suggests the internal diameter of the structure was about 1m. Several house sites have been recorded within a 500m distance to the north-west, though there are otherwise no obvious habitation remains close by.
