Description1. A pair of furnaces located at the southern end of the Castell Malgwyn Tinplate Works complex (NPRN: 404326).
The furnaces are set into a stone retaining wall which runs at right angles to the main retaining wall defining the eastern boundary of the complex. The east kiln is the larger of the two, 1.6m wide by 1.85m deep with a segmental arch and contains in the roof at the rear of the opening a small flue. This is square in section at the base, but becomes rounded and brick-lined towards the top and is topped with a slate slab, cut with a hole approximately the same diameter as the flue. The second kiln is not as well preserved and measures 1.5m wide by 1.2m deep.
It can be suggested that these structures were directly associated with the tinning process, when the iron sheets had a coating of tin applied, and thus may well have functioned as furnaces to melt the tin.
