A pumping station was built on this site, adjacent to Ely Wells, in 1850 by Cardiff Waterworks Company and a piped supply began in 1852. The undertaking was purchased by Cardiff Corporation in 1879 and was extended in 1881-2. The wells supplemented the Cardiff supply until 1926. Latterly they have supplied water to Aberthaw Power Station.
