Description
"It is stated that the inhabitants of North Wales, revolting against the government of Meredydd ab Owain ab Hywel Dda, Prince of South Wales, and nominally of all Wales, about the close of the tenth century, invited Eidwal, son of Meirig, to the throne: upon this, Meredydd immediately called together his troops, and the rival princes met at Llangwm, where, after a sharp conflict, Meredydd was totally defeated, and Tewdwr Mawr, his nephew, slain."
Source: Samuel Lewis, A Topographical Dictionary of Wales, 1849.
A battle was fought within the parish [of Llangwm], in the tenth century, between Eidwal and Meredydd, princes of Wales.
Source: John Marius Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, 1870-72.
According to Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust records, the location given (SH 9750 4538) is reputed to be the site of the Battle of Llangwm at Bryn Owen (no.100691), although there is no field evidence to support this.
Other sources, although unverified, confirm this location by suggesting that the battle was fought "in Denbighshire, six miles from Corwen".
