Description
The quay wall along the north bank of the River Teifi, constructed of coursed slate slabs.
The river Teifi saw little traffic. However, there was a small trade in slate from at least the eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth, as lighters brought down the produce from the Fforest (NPRN 40619) and Cilgerran (420663) quarries, a few miles upstream, to the wharves at Cardigan. In 1838, slate was deemed to be the staple of the port though it was of poorer quality than that of north Wales and at half the price. The tipping of waste into the Teifi at the Fforest quarries effectively ended its role as an artery of trade.
Cambrian Quay is portrayed as such on Ordnance Survey mapping (1906).
