Description
Earthworks on either side of Llanfoist Incline Stgae 1 (NPRN 91648) form part of the pre-industrial landscape of the Cwm Craf area of the Blorenge, and represent a series of field boundaries, which define the post-medieval field system of the area. These broadly correspond to the pattern of fields shown on the 1844 Tithe Map of Llanfoist, which at this date weres associated with the farms of Pen-y-Graig (NPRN 270148), Lower Pen-y-Graig (NPRN 45160) and Little Pen-y-Graig (NPRN 270128).

A small area of this field system, situated at the upper limit of enclosed land (300m OD) was surveyed by RCAHMW in 2006 as part of a wider investigation of Llanfoist Incline Stage 1. Here the field boundaries comprise of a series of collapsed stone walls and earthwork banks. A number of mature trees growing on these banks are likely to be the remnants of earlier hedgerows. Areas of ridge and furrow can also be traced within some of these fields, but relate to modern ploughing (Mr Roberts, Pen-y-Graig farm, pers. Comm.). The tithe award indicates that in 1844 this area was predominently used as pasture.

At the time of the tithe, this area was under the ownership of four different parties. The Blaenavon Iron and Coal Company owned the land associated with the incline, with the exception of a small section at the upper end owned by The Earl of Abergavenny. The areas on either side of the upper incline were divided between the Rev. David James and Ferdinand Hanbury Williams, with John Davies and John Tucker the tenant farmers.
