Description
There seems little doubt that there was a battle during the English Civil War between the parliamentarians and the royalists near Montgomery in September 1644, but the precise site has not been confirmed. Various accounts suggest that it was probably the largest battle ever fought in Wales. Montgomery was an important strategic location as it controlled access from England to mid Wales, falling, following the battle, to the parliamentarian side.
'Site of Battle of Montgomery' is marked on early Ordnance Survey mapping; the symbol is shown on the Shropshire side of the present national boundary, although west of Offa's Dyke.
