Description
Beguildy parish: "Here are the remains of an ancient British fortification, said to have been occupied by the renowned Uthyr Pendragon; and at the foot of a hill is a place called the Bloody Field, where a battle is said to have been fought." Source: Samuel Lewis, A Topographical Dictionary of Wales, 1833.
1146: "And then Maredudd ap Madog ab Idnerth was slain by Hugh de Mortimer." Source: Thomas Jones, The Chronicle of the Princes, 1955, p.121.
Other sources, as yet unverified, suggest that the "Battle of the Bloody Field" took place in 1146 at either Beguildy or Knucklas. The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust records one 'Bloody Field' near the foot of Crug y Buddar at SO 16 82 (no.6307) [nprn 405278], which is alleged to be the site of a battle although no details of the date or combatants are given, and another near Knucklas at SO 259 741 (no.1143).
