Description
War memorial in form of horse trough and drinking fountain. The memorial is mainly of concrete. A rectangular cistern with heavy lid, on which there is a metal sword, is supported over trough. At east end of cistern (away from church), the bowl of a drinking fountain is built in to ogee support. Inscription in capitals (facing road), "The Great War 1914-1918, 1939-1945, This memorial is erected by the grateful Village of Norton, to commemorate the names of its faithful sons, who fought and died for England and Liberty". More recently a slate plaque has been secured to the north side of the cistern on which is inscribed the names of the fallen of both world wars

This is an unusual First World War (and Second World War) memorial design (built ca 1920), providing practical benefit, rather than pure symbolic memorial.
