Description
1196: "And thence [Rhys ap Gruffydd] immediately set out with his host to Radnor and burned it. And after it had been burnt, that day in the valley close by, Roger Mortimer and Hugh de Sai drew up their forces equipped with horses and corselets and helmets and shields without warning against the Welsh. And when the great-hearted Rhys saw this, like a fierce lion he armed himself with a stout heart and a strong hand, and he attacked his enemies manfully and turned them to flight and pursued them and treated them vilely, although manfully, so that the Marchers greatly lamented the exceeding great slaughter of their men." In 1196 Rhys ap Gruffydd "gathered around him a great host from all parts of the South, and . . . pouring across the heights of Radnor Forest, his exultant army fell upon the border stronghold of Radnor itself, held by the house of Breos since the days of William Rufus. Its lord was at this time in the opposite quarter of South Wales, but two of his neighbours, Roger Mortimer of Wigmore and Hugh de Say of Richard's Castle, brought their men into the field in its defence. They were utterly defeated by the victorious Rhys; forty of their knights and a multitude of foot-soldiers were cut down by the Welsh, and, after setting fire to the town . . ."
