Description
One of the largest icehouses in Wales; it has a volume of 86.6cu.m. Built in the18th century it is entered by a 12m long sunken approach from the north. This leads to a dog-leg entrance tunnel with four doors. The stone circular chamber is c 6.5m deep overall, 4.5m in diameter, and tapers to 3.6m at the base. It has a light well to the top of the light well and a drainage channel running from the base. Iron rungs lead down to the base. The icehouse is in close proximity to the river Llwchwr, which acted as a source of ice. It is believed the icehouse was originally a powder factory during the Napoleonic Wars and subsequently used as an icehouse.
