Haverfordwest Secondary Modern School at Prendergast was built in 1951-52 and was officially opened on 25 September 1952 as one of several in Pembrokeshire in the 1950s to meet the rising demand in school places. Accommodation was initially for 700 pupils with the school having cost over £250,000 to build. The catchment area for the school took in the centre, northern, and eastern areas of Haverfordwest. Extensive playing fields were complemented by a sports hall, squash courts, gymnasium and a 400m athletics track. The main school hall could seat over 1,000 people.
The school later became Sir Thomas Picton Comprehensive School in 1978. During the early 1970s, additional accommodation was provided in order to fulfil the transition to a comprehensive school. Sir Thomas Picton Comprehensive School closed in 2019 and was later demolished in 2020, having amalgamated with Tasker Milward VC School to form new Haverfordwest High VC School (Upper School and 6th Form) on the same site, a project that cost around £48m to deliver.
