Description
Entry to the icehouse is through a wing built in 1890: A short entrance passage leads to the circular game/larder cool room with 4.2m internal diameter and a height of 5.2m to the apex of the lime-washed brick dome. A circular hole in the floor leads to the 4.2m in diameter and c.4.6m deep ice-pit; now destroyed. The stone walls are 70cm thick and include three windows. They are lined with slate shelves supported by metal rods, with the top shelf bearing eighty iron hooks. The walls are stuccoed externally as is the dome. This is the best example of a Welsh larder.
