Description
The icehouse was probably built by the grandfather of Sir George Everest, the surveyor General of India between 1760 and 1770. It is located in a steep slope above the Georgian Mansion (nprn 25572), partly mounded but mostly built into the natural slope. A stone revetted entrance leads to a passage 1.3-1.5m wide and 2m high with limestone with red brick vaults. The entrance faces south, therefore before entering the chamber the passage twice turns at right angles thereby preventing the warm air from blowing in; there are three doors in total. The chamber is 3.1m in diameter, 2.3m above floor level. The sides are straight right up to the dome, with a circular opening in the top. It is noted that its volume is 30cu.m.
