Description
Hambury (formerly 'Castle') Wood, owned by the Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales, is classed as ancient woodland and now managed as a nature reserve.
It covers an area of 4.79 ha. (11.8 acres) and is located just west of Weobly Castle on the steep slope of the north Gower limestone escarpment, at an altitude of 35m above OD. It is dominated by Oak and Ash with an understorey of neglected, overgrown, Hazel coppice. Also present are Field Maple, occasional Sycamore, some dead and dying English Elm, Hawthorn, Elder and Holly (1).

The wood is located on the north edge of Weobly manor. A preliminary investigation of the wood showed that it is bounded by earthen banks supporting post-and-wire fences. The north, downhill, boundary is an outward facing scarp about 1m high and up to 2m wide. The upper south boundary is a broad, externally low, bank 2m-4m wide and 1m high on its south side. There are prominent examples in the wood of Ash coppice stools up to 2m in diameter.
