Brynhyfryd School was founded as the Ruthin County School for Girls in 1898 and became co-educational in 1938. The school was initially housed in Brynhyfryd House (NPRN 308449). The present buildings date from the 1950s and early 1970s, and from a recent building programme in 2001-2. In 2006 the school hosted the Urdd Eisteddfod. In 2015 there were 1,061 pupils on roll with 189 in the sixth form. Two or three forms in each year-group study their courses through the medium of Welsh.
