Description

A single, circular lime kiln is built into the bank on the western side of Llangrannog cove and now sits within a switchback in the road. The lime kiln is marked as ‘Limekiln’ on the 1st Edition OS 25” map, but as ‘Old Limekiln’ on the 2nd Edition. It is not shown on the 1841 Tithe Plan for the parish of Llangrannog, despite 4 of the other kilns in the village being depicted. Field survey by Dyfed Archaeological noted an inscribed stone marked 1885 within the southwestern kiln eye and Moore-Colyer notes that it was probably built by Morgan Jenkins in 1887 (1988, 72).

The lime kiln is one of at least five that used to be located within Llangrannog (NPRN704012) and is a Grade II listed building.

The kiln is c. 5m in height with large kiln eyes on the north-east and south-west sides. The kiln eyes are 3.4m deep and 2.3m wide at their entrance. The tops of the eyes are formed from a segmental arch 2.2m across. The small fireplaces/draw-holes are still preserved, especially within the southern eye. The floors of the kiln eyes are formed from large slate slabs. A series of rusted iron spikes protrude from the sides of both kiln eyes. The kiln is c. 8m wide at the top, with a parapet wall that is 0.5m wide and 0.5m high. The crucible is infilled, and its original extent can no longer be discerned.

A terrestrial laser scan of the kiln was undertaken by RCAHMW in September 2022.
