Description
Construction of Number 11 Royal Ordnance Factory commenced in April 1940 on a vacant site off Corporation Road. The factory was officially opened in November 1940; its function was to make guns, including anti-tank and Bofors, and the first was manufactured in January 1941. Around 1500-2000 workers, mainly women, were employed between 1940 and 1945. The factory was taken over by Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd. after the war. The buildings have been demolished and the site cleared, presumably for re-development.
