Description
The Barn at The Maerdy is a substantial building, possibly earlier C18 with timber-framed side walls and a gabled west entry. The entry gable was extended westward in C19 to provide a granary loft, giving the whole range an unusual T-plan.

The barn is built from rubble stone with timber-frame sides set on a on high rubble base, with a slate roof and corrugated iron at the eaves replacing stone tiles. The front of the barn has full height double doors to the right, whilst the wall to the left is obscured by an open-bay corrugated iron lean-to which is continued on, to join the cowshed on the south side of the yard. The short wall to the right is obscured by a single storey stable range which is set at right angles with a C20 brick front and stable doors. The west end of the range has double doors with a timber lintel and a red brick arch, and a square loft window in the gable. The walls each side of the centre have corrugated-iron cladding to the timber frame. There is also a corrugated-iron lean-to and an open-bay lean-to to the right of gable.

The walls inside have an exposed timber-frame to the west and east walls, and a five-bay roof with oak trusses and triple purlins. There are also tie-beam trusses with equal collars and diagonal angle struts. The timber-framing survives in the original west gable ove rthe doorway.

The barn was listed as a substantial barn of interest for the mixed timber-frame and stone construction.
