Description
This mill on Level 3 was built in 1856, seemingly at the highest point at which an adequate supply of water could be obtained. The original building, built from unsawn blocks, was 18.4 metres by 13.5 metres internally, with a wheelpit on its east end capable of holding a waterwheel 6.7 metres diameter and 1.3 metres wide. It was designed to house eight saw tables, and was later extended on its north side to house more tables (perhaps four more) and dressing machines in two small extensions at the north-west corner. There was a stack yard for finished slates to the north of the buildings.
At some stage a crank was fitted to the waterwheel on its east side, driving flat rods which transmitted power to pumps in the East Twll. But the mill closed c1867, and the machinery was removed to an extension of the Level 9 mill (NPRN 408866). The waterwheel may also have been moved to Level 9 to provide power for the cable haulage system in the Level 9 adit.
